| Geez, even the 'small' amounts are making me go red, haha. I'm still working on a screenplay and am willing to dish out... perhaps $2000 tops, but with what the requirements are it hopefully wouldn't be too hard, especially if you have friends with privately run businesses and such... plus, I'm only a high school student with no job (and I haven't really been trying). It's good to see films at lower prices though because it gives me quite a bit of hope. |

YOU CAN'T MAKE A FILM FOR $7000...
but you can make an online magazine with things you have lying around. and nobody's fridge gets hurt.
Here's a response to:
I challenge you to come up with a follow up question to “I’m an actuary.”
So when do you expect to die?
Also, in this article, Shane says 16 hours a day. In the Dallas Morning News a couple of weeks ago, he said 18 hours a day. I bet it's closer to 15. Big liar!
Either way, I want to know which energy drink he suggests. I go with LOW CARB MONSTER energy drinks, myself. _________________ Corey Michael Mayo,

How was this film shot for 7k on 16 ? Seems to me that the stock, telecine, and developing along would far exceed the entire budget - unless of course all of that was donated for free.
Well done anyways.. |

This is a funny one, because I can imagine the nightmare that might be in NY,NY.
Here it is a matter of talking to the principles, and downplaying the commercial nature of the shoot, and playing up the hobby/personal project nature of the shoot.
You can just go up to the Dean or Professor or Research guy that controls acces to the lab and whoever will be present in the shot, and ask for 20 or 30 minutes to ask some questions on camera. No muss, no fuss...,
Sure it would be different if he were going to recreate the Bruce Banner Gamma ray exposure scene, or have some pyro effects or a shoot out.
Texas is very open to movie makers from anywhere... hell Dallas cut down 50 year old trees for Oliver Stone in JFK so the shots would look more like the zagruder film shots. |

Whenever a filmmaker low on funds and high on creative talent makes something spectacular, there is all of a sudden really high demand for comments and instructions. "How did you do it?" "What do you have to say about low-budget filmmaking?" etc..etc.. So the filmmaker speaks/writes etc. to meet this demand.
And there are some good points in what he writes in this particular case. However the fact of the matter is: You can always trade more of your budget in for creativity and talent.
Hell, you can even make a movie with $0 budget -from your own perspective- if you have the people skills to go out there and find other people to pay for your costs.
So I don't think Shane's article is about budget. Even though he may have intended it to be. Its main advice is simple and in my opinion and experience true: Take as much the time and resources it takes to shoot to your heart's content during production so that you won't have to suffer through a painfully long and tedious post-production. _________________ Özgür |

| Does anyone know if Shane has explained or posted a budget breakdown anywhere, as to what exactly the $7000 was spent on? Post here or PM me. Thanks! |

Come on... You just got that from About Schmidt didn't you?
Actually a better question for a rather young actuary would be: "Which test are you preparing for now?" These guys apparently have to keep taking tests to prove their worth and to get higher in the actuarial food chain. _________________ Özgür |

nah..haven't seen that yet...But a lot of what i do at work is rather similar to actuarial stuff. ie What's the risk of coming down w/ a specific disease, given a set of exposures, behaviors and demographic characteristics....and had a fair bit of demography in grad school which also applies actuarial concepts in population analyses...
Actually the next movie i'd like to get from Netflix given all the references to it in reviews of primer & on this list is Memento...one of those movies we've rented a couple of times but didnt' watch before it was due back from the local rental shoppe. |

Invention and Technology had an article about improving (not inventing) the mouse at Apple. One of the engineers needed a part in the middle of the night that he extracted from his refrigerator. His wife was not happy in the morning ... _________________ Building better Magic Elevators, since 1952 |

Memento is an excellent movie...
Brilliant director too. He's working on Batman Returns now. They were filming the exterior scenes here in Chicago over the summer, I'm quite excited about that. _________________ Özgür |
