The 10 steps must be done within a week. This way, everything stays fresh in your head. Steps must be performed in this order:

1. Watch the movie: if you get really confused - great, that's part of it.

2. Watch the movie again: still confused? Good. You did step 2 so you can better understand step 3.

3. Look at this timeline chart: http://neuwanstein.fw.hu/primer_timeline.html
Read over it twice.

4. Watch the movie with Director Commentary: there are little bits of info mentioned here that you may not have picked up in the film.

5. Watch the movie with Cast and Crew Commentary: there are little bits of info mentioned here that you may not have picked up in the film.

6. Watch the movie again: starting to see things a little differently? Good, young Padawan....onto step 7.

7. Look at the timeline chart above. Read over it it two or three times. Things are falling into place aren't they?

8. Watch the movie again. You may ask yourself how Shane Carruth ever planned this movie. Good luck finding an answer. I think even he didn't realize the number of layers of time he was putting together.

9. Look at the timeline chart above. You've got it now, don't you?

10. Watch the movie one last time. Congratulations, you've done it! Oh, if your ear is bleeding now, don't worry, it's normal.

Now go get some sleep.

...and don't forget that for one or more of the viewings, you should have the subtitles on.

It worked fine for me on a Mac using Safari.

Great timeline! I haven't watched Primer in a while, and wanted to check this site to see if there was anything new from the director, and caught onto this timeline. Great Job!

The timeline showed up fine on my Mac (using Safari) the first time I looked at it, but now it won't load. Please would one of you geniuses out there set up a stable Mac friendly version - so I can watch this movie again and try to get my head round it!

thank god for this timeline

when i first looked at it i was scared, but i waded my way through it and the fog is clearing a little...

i think it was the reason behind aaron going back in the first place that threw me off, but i guess it's just deciet and craving of power...

i'm going to try and get through the 10 steps but i don't have time just yet

I don't think that any of us on here should bless any posted timeline while Shane remains silent on the subject.

These are some other timeline threads that you might find helpful:

And there are lots more if you look back to the early days of this forum. Hope they don't make your head hurt more than it does already.

Hey junior,

I REALLY like your chart, but I have a few questions. By the way, I've seen the movie only 3 times, so there are maybe some parts I just didn't catch yet...

1- If Aaron(2) is the narrator, the one who left after fighting with Aaron(6), how could he know about Granger incident? This part is not just shown to us, it is commented by the narrator.

2- I think I remember hearing Aaron telling Abe that the party took place on the same day Abe told him about the machine. So, it would be evening of 9/22, and not 9/23. Am I right?

3- Why isn't Aaron going to the party in timeline 3?

4- Sometine in timeline 9, they plan toghether what to do at the party. I think this is just before the basketball scene. Aaron says: "He didn't shoot when I went the first time, and according to what Robert(?? not sure it's Robert) says, he didn't shoot either tonight." I don't get it. Aaron is probably referring to the comments Abe heard while in timeline 6, around 17h. However, this version of Aaron LIVED the party (and he lived it twice, if we assume he went during timeline 3).

5- I think I remember in the movie, when Abe uses the failsafe, the narrator mentions it's a 3 days trip. In this scenario, it's a 5 days trip. Am I mistaken?

Please someone give me some hints...

I don't think that anyone has ever posted a good theory as to how Hooded Aaron - the narrator - knows about the Granger incident. In fact almost everything about the narration is mysterious. Who is the phone call for? When did he make the phone call? How does he know about everything that happens, except how the party turns out? And what does he mean by "you won't find me"?

If you read through this forum you'll find endless debates about all of these but no clear answers. Some of the suggestions include - extra later conversations with the other two failsafers, more time travel at a later date bringing extra knowledge back from the future and passing it on to the narrator, more time travel earlier than anything we see with these traveller(s) hiding in the shadows and passing on what they see to the narrator, or just artistic license.

I think that the dates are arbitary, but the days of the week are fixed by comments made in the film:

Monday: Bench scenes. Party
Tuesday: Both airport scenes, and talk of baby birds.
Wednesday: Gas station, fountain
Thursday: How do cell phones work? Abe puts box on at 5pm.
Friday: 2 am Granger incident. Abe goes back 3 days 22 hours and 9 minutes to Monday morning.

Neither Abe nor Aaron originally went to the party. Aaron found out about what happened and discovered Abe's failsafe. He went back the first time to "fix" the party. Why he went back the second time we don't know, but by doing this he ends up doing the party again by himself and then finally with the failsafing Abe.

This version of Aaron is the twice failsafed Aaron. He has only just returned and the party hasn't happened yet. He knows what happened at the party the first time because he heard about it before he failsafed the first time. He knows what happened at the party the second time because he was there recording it. The third time he was there, after failsafing again, but this was "erased" when Abe failsafed so he only knows what happened because failsafing Abe heard about this before failsafing.

The reading, when Abe gets into the failsafe, is 3 days 22 hours and 9 minutes, so it's just under four days.
